Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays. Of course, there’s the food. Sure, a traditional turkey roast is great, but I love exploring the many other options we have for the main dish – deep fried, imu (build your own – just call 723-FIRE before lighting it – or use a community imu), or forgoing the turkey altogether and having Poke and Kalua Pig instead.
And for dessert, what’s Thanksgiving without standing in the long line at Lee’s Bakery & Kitchen in Chinatown to get their famous pumpkin, custard or pumpkin-custard combo pie?
But what I love most about Thanksgiving is the quality time spent with family and friends, and of course our yearly tradition of grazing throughout the day – in-between watching the Macy’s day parade, National Dog show, or football on television. Simple pleasures, sure. But the simple things in life can be the ones we’re most thankful for.
What are your favorite Thanksgiving traditions?
Thankful for Thanksgiving potlucks… the aroma, the presentation, the kaleidoscope of flavors that says, only in Hawaii.
