Every morning I like to head to the kitchen with sleepy eyes, open the fridge and pull out the staples of my thick vegetable green smoothies: kale or spinach (or both), carrots, cucumber and celery.

Next, I decide if I am in the mood for a “full on” green smoothie or one with some sweetness. Then I think about seasonal flavors. For September, I went for cranberries, since they are now being harvested, and apple bananas, which abound in Hawaii and I always have them stocked in my fruit basket.

I am a big believer that you are what you eat, so I try to nourish my body with as many natural ingredients as possible. Blending it all up is a quick way to stay healthy on the go.

Full Recipe:

  • 1/4 cup cranberries
  • 1 apple banana (or regular banana)
  • 5-8 baby carrots
  • ½ cucumber (skin on)
  • 2 stalks of celery
  • 2-3 cups of your favorite green leafy vegetable (I used spinach here)
  • 1 handful of ice

So there we have it – a simple yet healthy and refreshing smoothie.
