Ask anyone who knows me well and they will tell you that I am highly passionate about living a healthy lifestyle that includes healthy eating, fitness and a healthy balance of work and personal life. Living in Hawaii makes my lifestyle of well-being an easy path with communities and Kamaʻāina sharing the same mindset throughout Oahu.
Healthy foods abound on our beautiful island. Health food stores like one of my favorites, “Down to Earth,” farmers markets and farm stands along the side of the road are just various places I stop and grab some fresh local, organic veggies to make meals and Vitamix smoothies. I am always within five minutes of a freshly grown apple-banana for a healthy snack!
Looking for fitness activities? Oahu has beautiful hiking trails with some even ending with waterfalls and swimming areas. Yoga, dance, aerial, Jiu-Jitsu, gyms, and let’s not forget beaches, are just a few of the places you can work on your fitness!
This is why there is no reason for doubt in my mind that in Gallup and Healthways 2012-2013 survey of cities with the most well-being options, Hawaii is ranked fifth of 189 communities with a score of 70.7 for well-being. According to Gallup and Healthways, “The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index score is an average of six sub-indexes, which individually examine life evaluation, emotional health, work environment, physical health, healthy behaviors, and access to basic necessities. The overall score and each of the six sub-index scores are calculated on a scale from 0 to 100, where a score of 100 represents the ideal.” Gallup and Healthways has been tracking these measures daily since January 2008.
